DARVO — Deny, Attack, Reverse Victim and Offender — is a term coined by psychologist Jennifer Freyd to describe a specific defensive pattern used by people confronted about harmful behavior. It is one of the most consistently identifiable manipulation patterns in TRUVEXA's analysis of conversations, precisely because it follows a rigid, recognisable structure.

The pattern has three sequential moves. First, denial — a flat refusal to acknowledge the behavior occurred, often with confident specificity ('I never said that, you're imagining it'). Second, attack — redirecting focus onto the accuser's character or credibility rather than the original claim ('you're always so sensitive, this is exactly your problem'). Third, and most disorienting, the reversal — the original accuser is repositioned as the actual aggressor, and the original wrongdoer claims victim status.

What makes DARVO so effective, and so damaging, is the disorientation it produces in the person raising a legitimate concern. Within a single conversation, they can go from stating a clear grievance to apologising for having raised it — not because the grievance was invalid, but because the conversational structure has been inverted so skilfully that defending the original point starts to feel unreasonable.

TRUVEXA identifies DARVO patterns by tracking the sequence across a conversation rather than any single message — a denial followed within a short window by an attack on character, followed by a victim-claim from the original accused party, is a structural fingerprint that is difficult to fake accidentally and rarely appears in genuine misunderstandings.

Recognising DARVO in the moment is genuinely difficult, because the pattern is specifically designed to make the target doubt their own perception. This is precisely why documented, evidence-based pattern analysis — seeing the sequence laid out from an actual conversation rather than relying on memory during a disorienting exchange — has real value.

If a conversation has left you feeling like you started with a legitimate concern and ended up apologising for raising it, that specific shift is exactly what TRUVEXA is built to identify and document with evidence from your own messages.
